Lesson 7 – Age is not an excuse
If you haven’t watched Squid Game, go watch it. It is a Netflix hit and talk of the town now. I seldom watch Korean drama in Netflix because they are usually shown in the Korean language and reading English subtitles is not my cup of tea. I watched it simply because it was dubbed in English. It turned out that it was one of few exciting series shown in Netflix and I watched it all the way to the end. There are lessons we could learn from all the games and below are the 7 lessons on learning that I learned from the first game in the series: Red Light Green Light
Lesson 1 – Take your challenge seriously
The first two guys in the game moved too fast and didn’t take the game seriously. The first two guys in the game tried to compete against each other and did not take the rules seriously. They were the first two to be eliminated. If you moved too fast and did not take your training seriously, you will likely to fail. Data Analytics is not a tough topic but you need time to understand the concept. If you skip certain parts and jumped into advanced data analytics, you will not be able to build a strong foundation in data analytics and soar to greater heights with ease later
Lesson 2 – Turning back is not an option
A number of players saw the first two guys got eliminated and were overcome by fear. They decide to give up and turned back. But turning back was not an option and they were eliminated quickly. There is no turning in the new digital economy. You cannot turn back to the old ways of doing things. Like it or not, the data you own is going to grow bigger and bigger. If you give up training and use back the old way of analyzing your data manually, you will be overwhelmed by the amount of data you have to handle. In the end, you will not have the time and energy to perform well.
Lesson 3 – Keeping things at status quo will get you eliminated
Another group of players froze on the spot after seeing a large number of players got eliminated. They didn’t dare to move. But in the show, the clock was ticking. If they didn’t move at all, they would be eliminated when the time was up. Keeping your work as status quo will allow you to get by in the short run. But when the time is up and everybody has moved into data analytics, you will no longer be competent in your job. Keeping thins at status quo will get you eliminated in the end.
Lesson 4 – Hiding behind someone is not a smart move
Sae-Byeok was one of the players in the game. She hid behind Jang Deok-su initially to avoid being seen by the giant girl doll. It seemed like a good move but she was soon discovered by Jand Deok-su. She was smart to abandon following Jand Deok-su later because Jang may decide to sabotage her in the game. Another possibility was for Jang to move slower so that she had no time to cross the finishing line. Hiding behind someone, like asking someone to do your data analytics is not a smart move. The person may not stay with you all the way to the end. He/she may move to another company or another position. When that happens, you will be left with a higher standard report to deliver with no data analytics skills to deliver the report. Start learning data analytics early to avoid such a situation from happening to you.
Lesson 5 – Do not help others if you are not there yet
Seong Gi-hun was held back by a player in the show. The player asked Gi-hun for help. Gi-hun decided to abandon him because there was no way he could make it to the finishing line if Gi-hun helped him. Do not help others if you are not trained yet. It is like the blind leading the blind. Ask the person to get help from somebody more experienced. Like a trainer who is good with data analytics and have the relevant experience to train him. That leads me to the netxt lesson.
Lesson 6 – Get help from an expert
Seong Gi-hun fell down when he was reaching the finishing line. He almost got eliminated as a result. Ali came along and held him in the air. Ali was strong enough to hold him in the air and stayed still. When you are learning data analytics, make sure you get a trainer that is skillful enough to help you when you meet an obstacle. If you do not get the relevant support, you may not be able to complete your upgrading. That may get you eliminated. A lot of training only shows you how to do something using their “perfect” data. They are not able to help you when you are working with your own imperfect data. That’s why it is important you can find a trainer who can help you apply what you learned back to your job. Get a trainer with practical experience.
Lesson 7 – Age is not an excuse
Oh II Nam was old but he did not fear getting eliminated. He advanced at a consistent pace and was able to make it to the finishing line with extra time left. He was not the last one in the game to make it to the finishing line and he was not eliminated. Age is not an excuse not to be trained. Training and learning is for all ages. Do not give the excuse that you are too old for data analytics. Just learn consistently and you will be able to make it.
